Workshops

On Saturday and Sunday, four-hour workshops will take place in the three course rooms in the mornings and afternoons. Our "artist teams" will each share a room: the "Photorealism" team with Melina Wuggonig and Marissa Oosterlee, the "Custom & Fantasy" team with Rod Fuchs and Scott MacKay, and the "Freehand Creativity" team with Anzhela Dmytrenko and David Naylor. You can choose which workshop you would like to attend in the morning and afternoon. No advance registration required!

Participants work hands-on under the guidance of the artist. The most important tools and materials are provided by the respective sponsor and the organizer.

Please note our recommendations on “Tools and materials at the International Airbrush Days.”

Scott MacKay:

Developing your own fantasy designs for custom painting
To avoid copyright issues and provide customers with a unique piece of art, airbrush artists should be able to create their own fantasy designs. Scott shows how to create a design using photo references and technical aids, which participants then translate into airbrush art.

Custom painting classics: graphics & flames
Graphic patterns or lines and flames are part of the basic repertoire of custom painting. Under Scott's guidance, participants tackle a classic design.

Marissa Oosterlee:

Photorealistic Portrait Techniques
Marissa Oosterlee's portraits are in high demand in the art world. They are characterized by unique scenes and details as well as incredible photorealism. Participants will learn and practice Marissa's techniques on portrait parts.

More than just airbrushing: working with mixed media
For Marissa, airbrushing is just one tool among many. In her work, she combines it with brush techniques, colored pencils, etching techniques, and many other creative methods. Participants in this workshop will also have the opportunity to experiment with a wide range of tools.

David Naylor:

Introduction to the micro freehand airbrush technique
Nothing is too small for David Naylor. He loves the challenge of painting portraits and other motifs freehand with an airbrush as small as possible while still looking completely realistic. In his workshop, he explains what is important in terms of materials and technique. With basic exercises and a given motif, participants practise detailed freehand work in Post-it format.

Freehand airbrush techniques in colour
Freehand airbrushing requires a great deal of precision. When colour is added, proper planning and colour selection are essential. Using an illustration excerpt, David explains his technique and gives participants the opportunity to try it out.

Anzhela Dmytrenko:

Dream Tree: Fantastic Nature Illustration
Whether in pictures or on walls, fantastic trees and other natural elements can be found in many of Anzhela Dmytrenko's works. Immerse yourself in Angela's fantasy world and create a piece of nature with her.

Anzhela's freehand loop technique
For most airbrushers, freehand loops and swirls are just a warm-up exercise or a functional test for the airbrush. For Anzhela, they form the basis of dreamlike designs and illustrations. With Anzhela, you will learn how individual "squiggles" can be turned into entire worlds.

Melina Wuggonig:

Wildlife Essentials: Eyes and Fur
The eyes and fur are two of the biggest challenges in animal illustration. They give the work the necessary realism and character. Using an excerpt, participants practise designing these important elements with Melina.

Light and airy: realistic plumage
The texture of feathers differs significantly from fur structures. Melina explains the differences and her approach. Participants in her workshop can try their hand at creating a piece of colourful plumage.

Rod Fuchs:

Custom Painting Creature Design
Rod Fuchs' fantasy creatures are simply unmistakable. In his workshop, participants learn how to create one of his creatures in custom painting style on metal.

Skulls – from sketch to design
Skulls are still one of the most popular designs in custom painting. Rod Fuchs constantly reinvents this "standard motif" and creates unique designs for his customers. In this workshop, he shows how he develops skulls and encourages participants to create their own designs.
