Another cinema illustrator has passed away: Drew Struzan
We recently reported about the significant influence of American artist Drew Struzan in connection with Martin Schlierkamp's film art in the current German issue of AIRBRUSH STEP BY STEP – now it has been announced that Drew Struzan passed away on Monday at the age of 78.
Drew Struzan trained as an illustrator at the Art Centre College of Design in Los Angeles. After completing his studies, he initially designed album covers for Black Sabbath and Alice Cooper, among others. In 1975, he began designing cinema posters and made his big breakthrough two years later with the poster design for Star Wars. In total, he designed over 150 film posters, including for Indiana Jones, Police Academy and Back to the Future. His style-defining working method always included a pencil drawing, which he then coloured with coloured pencils, airbrush and brushes. He was a pioneering role model for many illustrators and airbrush artists.
