David Naylor
Airbrush artist with 40 years of experience and a love of detail and technique
David Naylor is not a professional artist, but he has over 40 years of experience as an airbrush artist. Born in England, he lives in Barcelona, Spain, where he works for the city's subway company. His “normal” job has always given him plenty of scope to experiment and develop as an artist. David likes to paint realism and hyperrealism. He prefers to paint freehand – “as best I can,” he says modestly. Over the course of his artistic career, he has painted on a wide variety of surfaces, from textiles to metal.
He is also technically skilled. He enjoys tinkering with airbrush parts or adapting them to meet his high standards. With small freehand mini-portraits, he likes to push his airbrush to its limits and get the maximum detail out of it. This allows him to test his optimizations, adjusted airbrush levers, and color mixing ratios and try to work as precisely as possible.
Lately, he has been experimenting with AI and using it to find new ways to experiment with different complex surfaces, textures, and ideas. He uses image editing software to alter shapes, light, or textures to achieve even more appealing images than the AI provides him.

„Meet & Greet“-Demo: David Naylor’s Micro-Airbrush-Techniken
Introduction to the micro freehand airbrush technique
Nothing is too small for David Naylor. He loves the challenge of painting portraits and other motifs freehand with an airbrush as small as possible while still looking completely realistic. In his workshop, he explains what is important in terms of materials and technique. With basic exercises and a given motif, participants practise detailed freehand work in Post-it format.
Freehand airbrush techniques in colour
Freehand airbrushing requires a great deal of precision. When colour is added, proper planning and colour selection are essential. Using an illustration excerpt, David explains his technique and gives participants the opportunity to try it out.
Technical questions about Harder & Steenbeck airbrushes
David Naylor was one of the first people to test the new airbrush models from Harder & Steenbeck. He has been tinkering with, experimenting and optimising his own airbrush equipment for years and has a wealth of expertise and experience in all aspects of airbrush functions, as well as practical "life hacks". He will be available to answer your technical questions at the International Airbrush Days.
